Al Quraan Abdullah ibn Amr (Radiallahu Anhu) was a distinguished companion of Nabi Salallahu Alaihi Wasallam. He was very dedicated to the worship of Allah so much so that his father complained to nabi Salallahu Alaihi Wasallam about him over exerting himself in Ibaadat. His father said that he would always be reciting Quraan, performing Salaah and Fasting without giving himself any rest.
Nabi Salallahu Alaihi Wasallam called him in one day and enquired from him as to how much Quraan he recited daily and he said that he finished one Quraan each day. Nabi Salallahu Alaihi Wasallam then asked him to reduce his reading and rather complete one Quraan every month. He began to bargain with Nabi Salallahu Alaihi Wasallam saying that he could do better than that. Nabi Salallahu Alaihi Wasallam then said he could finish it in a week and he again negotiated with Nabi Salallahu Alaihi Wasallam. Finally Nabi Salallahu Alaihi Wasallam told him that he should comlete one reading in THREE days and not less than that because if he had done it in a shorted period he would not be able to comprehend its meaning. He accepted Nabi Salallahu Alaihi Wasallam advice and it has been said that since then untill he dies every third day he would complete one reading.
